John Stone

Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1967, John Stone holds degrees in English and Religious Studies from McGill University in Montreal, as well as a PhD from the University of Barcelona.

John works primarily on English as a language of culture in eighteenth-century Spain, whether as the language of expatriates who brought, imported (and sometimes smuggled) English books from Great Britain or Ireland; as the language of bilingual and bi-cultural immigrant families, often with Irish roots; as the language of anglophone Catholics in exile at such institutions as the Royal Scots College in Valladolid; or as a language of learning for non-anglophones, be they scientists such as the surgeon Antoni de Gimbernat  or writers such as José Cadalso. This proto-history of English in Spain also involves English as a direct source language for translations and the censorship regime's attempts to control English print as it did print in Spanish, Catalan, or French.

In 2009 John enjoyed an extended study leave at the Beinecke Library, Yale University, and he was later invited by the Yale Boswell Project to edit the correspondence of Thomas David Boswell, who resided in Valencia in the 1770s. He has been a British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies visiting fellow, and was recently among the first winners of a research award at the University of Aberdeen's Sir Duncan Rice Library.

Since 2011 he has served as president of the English-Speaking Children's Parents' Association, an educational advocacy group which works to have heritage speakers recognised as special needs students.https://sites.google.com/site/johnstonebcn/
